The southernmost town in Sicily, Portopalo, comprises Portopalo di Capo Passero and Isola delle Correnti, or "Island of Currents". The town is situated at the meeting point between the Ionian and Mediterranean seas and is farther south than Tunis.
Founded as a fishing village, Portopalo now is one of the most important active ports of Sicily. Isola delle Correnti is also known for its constant wind and surf, making it a good place for windsurfing. In 1987 it was designated as part of Sicily's parks and nature reserves.
Portopalo was also a set for a lot of famous Movies:
